This phrase, which spread widely on social media following the 2024 Seoul International Buddhism Expo, was more than just a passing meme. In many ways, it reflected how today’s MZ Generation (Millennials and Gen Z) views religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From \u201cEnlightenment\u201d balloons and wooden-fish-shaped cotton candy to AI Buddha counseling booths, chocolate Buddha sculptures, DJ Monk performances, \u201cGot Enlightened\u201d T-shirts, and \u201cLove You, Sentient Beings\u201d merchandise, a wide range of unexpected content drew tens of thousands of young visitors to the expo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People began calling it \u201cHip Buddhism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many observers dismissed the phenomenon as merely a successful marketing campaign. Yet a closer look reveals a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young people had not abandoned religion. They were searching for an experience they could understand and relate to.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s MZ Generation responds more strongly to experience than explanation. They are drawn more to empathy than authority, and they prefer participation over lectures. Religion is no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Seoul International Buddhism Expo and Haetal Company understood this reality remarkably well. Young audiences are not merely consuming information\u2014they are consuming experiences. Rather than explaining Buddhism, these projects allowed people to experience it. That difference proved crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 Mind Design: Kim Min-ji and the Creation of a Cultural Platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the center of the \u201cHip Buddhism\u201d phenomenon stands Kim Min-ji, CEO of Mind Design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to an interview published by LongBlack, Kim has been organizing the Seoul International Buddhism Expo since 2013, working to connect Buddhist traditions with contemporary cultural sensibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recalled feeling that the value of Buddhism and traditional Korean culture was not being communicated effectively. Determined to change that, she redesigned the expo from the ground up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She introduced Buddhist art fairs, discovered emerging artists, and paid attention to every detail\u2014from exhibition design to lighting. By studying the tastes and habits of younger generations, she helped introduce attractions such as Enlightenment balloons, wooden-fish cotton candy, and AI Buddha counseling booths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people described the result as \u201chip.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Kim offered a different perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople come the first time because it\u2019s hip. But if they come a second time, it can\u2019t rely on being hip anymore. To be hip means having uniqueness and attraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That statement captures the essence of the phenomenon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of Hip Buddhism was not the result of a few trendy products. It was the product of more than a decade of persistent effort to present timeless values in ways that modern audiences could genuinely connect with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The content appeared fresh because it was rooted in authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 Haetal Company: Joo Yeo-jin and the Art of Cultural Translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the Buddhism Expo built the stage, Haetal Company founder Joo Yeo-jin became one of its most visible content creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father, Venerable Taehyun, introduced Buddhism through songs, humor, and playful conversation. Buddhist teachings were not presented as rigid doctrines but as part of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joo reflected on this experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause of that, Buddhism always felt hip and fun to me. I wanted people to know that the Buddha\u2019s teachings could be enjoyable, not just difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This single statement is perhaps the key to understanding Haetal Company.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joo did not suddenly decide to brand Buddhism as an adult. Rather, she transformed the Buddhism she had experienced since childhood into contemporary cultural content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some ways, her story resembles that of a Remnant\u2014a generation raised with the Gospel from an early age who later carries that faith into the future. Experiences embedded during childhood often become the foundation for future creativity, ministry, and cultural influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Products such as the \u201cGot Enlightened\u201d T-shirt, \u201cLove You, Sentient Beings,\u201d the Karma Laundry pop-up, and the \u201cBuddha, I Love It!\u201d festival were never just merchandise or events. They carried Buddhist ideas\u2014enlightenment, compassion, karma, and liberation\u2014within forms that modern audiences could naturally engage with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joo did not merely explain religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She allowed people to experience it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 What Was the Real Driving Force Behind the Success?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The common denominator between Kim Min-ji and Joo Yeo-jin is not simply that they belong to the MZ Generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both had personally experienced Buddhism and transformed those experiences into content.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim spent years building a platform. Joo translated lived Buddhist culture into contemporary language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One built the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other created the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither changed the essence of Buddhism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This raises an important question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was the true source of success the attractiveness of Buddhism\u2019s IP (Intellectual Property), or the authenticity of people who had personally experienced that IP and transformed it into content?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(IP refers to a foundational source material\u2014such as a worldview, story, or universe\u2014that can expand into multiple forms of content.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is likely both\u2014but authenticity proved decisive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buddhism did not suddenly become hip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather, people who had lived and experienced Buddhism spent years cultivating authenticity, and that authenticity eventually blossomed into compelling content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 The Gospel Already Possesses One of the Most Powerful IPs in History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At this point, the Korean Church may need to ask an important question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we truly lack content?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is quite the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel is one of the most powerful messages in human history, and the Bible contains one of the richest narrative IPs ever known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Exodus tells a story of freedom and liberation. David and Goliath reveal the victory of faith. Esther demonstrates how one person’s courage can change an era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ represent the greatest message of redemption in human history.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the lesson from Buddhism’s recent success is worth remembering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its strength did not lie merely in possessing rich IP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its strength came from people who had lived that story and expressed it through authentic cultural forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel already possesses extraordinary IP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, it may possess something even greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Buddhism could expand experiences of philosophy and practice into cultural content, then the Gospel\u2014with its themes of salvation, transformation, community, and mission\u2014holds immense potential for cultural expression as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What may be needed today is not more content alone, but people who have deeply experienced the Gospel and are prepared to communicate it creatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 The Gospel Does Not Change, but Cultural Content Can Continue to Expand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just as Joo Yeo-jin built content from the Buddhist culture she experienced in childhood, what might happen if today’s believers\u2014and the next generation of Remnants raised in the Gospel\u2014worked together to expand Gospel-centered content?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as Kim Min-ji spent more than a decade building cultural platforms, what might happen if future generations connected Gospel experiences with wider audiences and broader cultural spaces?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel is the standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But being the standard does not mean being outdated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather, it means serving as the original source from which creativity and expansion can emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel does not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the cultural content that carries the Gospel can continue to grow, evolve, and expand across generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Hip Buddhism emerged from years of authenticity, lived experience, and cultural creativity, then the Church already possesses a story that is older, deeper, and even more powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That leaves us with one final question.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are today’s believers and tomorrow’s Remnants ready to translate the Gospel they have experienced into the language and culture of their generation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
