방채영 기자는 인터넷신문 더미디어저널리스트의 대표·발행인·편집장이다. 기사를 기획하고 취재·작성하는 일부터 사진과 이미지를 고르고 웹사이트를 관리하는 일까지 매체 운영 전반을 직접 총괄한다.

방 기자가 기자가 되기 전 처음 다룬 것은 글이 아니라 빛이었다.
빛을 다루던 시간
방채영 기자는 웹 디자인 과정을 수료했으며, 홍대 롤링홀 조감독으로 공연 제작 현장에 들어섰다. 이후 SJ비보이즈가 기획·제작한 댄스뮤지컬 「비보이를 사랑한 발레리나」에 조명 조감독으로 참여했다.

공연에서 조명은 무대를 밝히는 일에 그치지 않는다. 빛의 방향과 밝기, 색에 따라 같은 사람과 공간도 전혀 다른 모습으로 보인다. 무엇을 드러내고 무엇을 감출지 선택하면서 관객의 시선과 장면의 분위기를 만들어낸다.
방 기자에게 조명 현장은 사람과 사물을 바라보는 시선을 배우는 첫 번째 공간이었다. 이후 현장에서 조명감독이 교체되는 일을 겪으며 자신의 진로를 다시 고민하게 됐다. 이 변화는 직업 사진가의 길로 들어서는 인생의 전환점이 됐다.
조명에서 사진으로
조명 현장을 떠난 방 기자는 카메라를 들었다. 이후 약 10년 동안 직업 사진가로 활동했다.
조명이 빛을 통해 관객의 시선을 이끄는 일이었다면, 사진은 수많은 장면 가운데 무엇을 바라보고 기록할 것인지 선택하는 일이었다. 그는 사진을 단순히 눈앞의 모습을 아름답게 담는 기술로만 생각하지 않았다.
“사진 일을 하면서 눈으로 사물을 분석하고 관찰했다. 피사체가 상징하는 바가 무엇인지 늘 연구했다.”
카메라의 프레임 안에 무엇을 담고 무엇을 제외할지, 한 사람의 표정과 하나의 사물이 무엇을 말하고 있는지 고민했다. 눈앞의 장면을 기록하는 데 그치지 않고 피사체가 지닌 의미와 그 뒤에 놓인 이야기를 읽으려 했다.
방 기자는 촬영한 사진의 원본 색감을 강하게 바꾸거나 과도한 필터를 적용하는 후보정을 지양했다. 피사체를 실제와 다르게 꾸미기보다 촬영 당시의 모습과 분위기를 전달하는 것을 중요하게 여겼기 때문이다.
사진을 대하는 이러한 태도는 이후 기사를 작성하는 과정에도 이어졌다. 사진의 원래 색을 인위적으로 바꾸지 않았던 것처럼 기사에서도 사실을 자극적으로 포장하거나, 미리 정해놓은 결론에 맞춰 가공하지 않으려 한다.
사진가로 활동한 10년은 방 기자에게 오래 관찰하고 의미를 분석하는 태도를 길러준 시간이었다. 이 경험은 훗날 사건의 표면을 넘어 원인과 배경을 질문하는 기자로 성장하는 밑바탕이 됐다.
관찰은 질문이 되었다
사진은 하나의 순간을 보여줄 수 있지만, 그 장면이 왜 만들어졌는지까지 모두 설명하기는 어렵다. 피사체의 의미를 찾던 방 기자의 시선은 점차 사람과 사건의 배경을 묻는 질문으로 확장됐다.
방 기자는 지역언론 신한뉴스에서 기자로 활동한 것을 계기로 본격적인 언론인의 길에 들어섰다. 사진가로서 익힌 관찰력과 분석력은 취재 현장에서도 이어졌다.
신한뉴스에서는 지방자치와 사회·문화 현안뿐 아니라 정치와 교계 문제도 다뤘다. 2023년 7월에는 안철수 의원의 충북 청주 수해 복구 봉사활동을 포토뉴스로 보도했다. 이후 공공안전과 정신건강, 종교단체 관련 현안 등으로 보도 분야를 넓혀갔다. 신한뉴스 기사 링크
사진가가 프레임 안에 무엇을 담을지 판단한다면, 기자는 수많은 사실 가운데 무엇을 확인하고 어떤 질문을 던질지 판단해야 한다. 사진이 장면을 포착하는 작업이었다면, 기사는 그 장면이 만들어진 원인과 배경을 추적하는 작업이었다.
관찰은 사진이 됐고, 관찰에서 태어난 질문은 기사가 됐다.
다락방 사태에 최초 대응 보도…교계에 이름 알리다
방채영 기자는 세계복음화전도협회 공보위원으로 활동한 경력이 있다. 그는 이 경력을 독자에게 공개하는 것이 해당 보도의 배경을 판단하는 데 필요하다고 봤다.
신한뉴스 기자로 활동하던 2024년에는 코람데오연대가 RUTC 건축 후원헌금 반환 소송을 예고하면서 이른바 ‘다락방 사태’가 확산됐다. 코람데오연대는 다락방 탈퇴자와 비판적 인사들을 중심으로 결성된 단체다.
방 기자는 2024년 8월 13일 신한뉴스에 「RUTC 건축 후원헌금 반환 소송 관련, 세계복음화전도협회 입장 표명」을 보도했다. 그는 이를 특정 단체를 일방적으로 옹호하기 위한 기사가 아니라, 논쟁의 한쪽 당사자에게도 입장을 밝힐 기회를 제공한 대응 보도였다고 설명했다.
방 기자는 자신이 당시 다락방 사태에 언론을 통해 최초로 대응한 기자였다고 밝혔다. 이 보도를 계기로 다락방 사태에 최초 대응한 기자로 교계에 이름을 알렸지만 그에 따른 후폭풍도 컸다.
방 기자는 해당 보도 이후 코람데오연대 측의 항의가 신한뉴스에 이어졌으며, 이후 자신이 해고됐다고 밝혔다. 그는 코람데오연대 측의 항의가 해고 결정에 영향을 미쳤다고 보고 있다.
그러나 해고는 기자 활동의 끝이 되지 않았다. 오히려 자신의 보도와 편집 방향을 직접 책임질 수 있는 독립적인 언론이 필요하다고 판단하는 계기가 됐다.
해고에서 창간으로
신한뉴스를 떠난 방채영 기자는 외부의 항의나 압력에 따라 한쪽 당사자의 입장이 보도에서 배제돼서는 안 된다고 생각했다. 논쟁적인 사안일수록 서로 다른 주장을 확인하고, 각 당사자가 무엇을 말하는지 독자에게 전달할 수 있어야 한다는 문제의식도 커졌다.
기존 언론사의 편집 방향 안에서 기사를 작성하는 것을 넘어 자신이 중요하다고 판단한 사실과 질문을 온전히 담을 수 있는 언론을 직접 만들기로 했다.
그 결과 2025년 인터넷신문 『더미디어저널리스트』를 창간했다. 더미디어저널리스트는 2025년 1월 9일 제호 등록을 마쳤으며, 현재 방채영 기자가 대표자와 발행인을 맡고 있다. 인터넷신문 등록과 사업자등록도 완료했다.
신한뉴스에서의 해고가 한 언론사를 떠나게 된 사건이었다면 더미디어저널리스트의 창간은 자신의 편집권과 보도 원칙을 직접 책임지겠다는 선택이었다.
매체의 방향은 “사건의 본질을 묻고, 맥락을 읽는 뉴스미디어”라는 문장에 담겨 있다. 단편적인 사실을 빠르게 전달하는 데 머물지 않고 사건이 발생한 배경과 그 안에 놓인 사람들의 이야기를 함께 살피겠다는 의미다.
방채영 기자가 기사를 쓰는 방식
방 기자는 누가, 언제, 어디서, 무엇을 했는지 전달하는 데서 기사를 끝내지 않으려 한다. 사건이 왜 발생했으며 그 결과가 사람과 사회에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 함께 살피는 것을 중요하게 여긴다.
속보와 일반 보도에서는 육하원칙을 갖추고 공식 발표와 원문 자료, 당사자의 발언을 우선 확인한다. 사실과 기자의 판단을 구분하고 확인되지 않은 내용을 사실처럼 단정하지 않는 것도 중요한 원칙이다.
반면 기획기사와 비평에서는 하나의 사건을 더 큰 사회적 질문으로 확장한다. 개별 사건을 단발성 보도로 끝내기보다 그 뒤에 놓인 제도와 문화, 반복되는 구조를 살펴보고자 한다.
방 기자가 현재 더미디어저널리스트에서 다루는 분야는 정치와 사회, 경제, 미디어, 대중문화, 정신건강, 종교 등으로 넓다. 그러나 기사의 중심에는 사람과 사회에 대한 질문이 놓여 있다.

기획하는 기자
방채영 기자의 강점은 사람과 사물, 사회현상을 관찰한 뒤 그 안의 구조와 의미를 분석해 새로운 콘텐츠로 기획하는 능력에 있다.
“어떤 것이든 분석하고 기획하는 것을 즐긴다.”
그는 하나의 사건에서 또 다른 질문을 발견하고 이를 연속적인 기획으로 확장한다. 대표적인 사례가 특별기획 「정신질환의 시대」다.
「정신질환의 시대」는 정신질환을 개인의 의지나 성격 문제로만 바라보는 사회적 시선에 질문을 던진다. 첫 편 「살아남기 위해 인간은 어디까지 가는가」에서는 정신건강의 위기를 개인의 실패가 아닌 시대의 신호로 바라봤다. 두 번째 편 「우울증은 게으름이 아니다」에서는 ‘안 하는 것’과 ‘하지 못하는 것’의 차이를 살피며 우울증에 대한 대표적인 오해를 다뤘다. 「정신질환의 시대」

언론의 공간까지 직접 만들다
더미디어저널리스트 창간 초기에는 신문사 솔루션 업체에 의뢰해 웹사이트를 제작·운영했다. 그러나 매체의 취지와 정체성을 다시 정립하는 과정에서 기존 사이트의 구조와 운영 방식도 재검토하게 됐다.
방 기자는 워드프레스를 기반으로 현재의 공식 웹사이트를 직접 제작하기로 했다. Visual Studio Code와 Claude Code를 활용해 사이트의 구조와 기능, 디자인을 직접 기획하고 구축했다.
어떤 기사를 어떤 방식으로 분류하고 독자에게 어떻게 보여줄 것인지도 매체의 편집 방향과 연결돼 있다고 판단했기 때문이다.
방 기자는 기사를 쓰는 사람이면서 기사가 독자에게 전달되는 공간을 설계하는 사람이 됐다. 현재 뉴스 기획과 취재, 기사 작성, 편집뿐 아니라 이미지와 디지털 콘텐츠 제작, 웹사이트 관리와 운영까지 총괄하고 있다.
방 기자는 독서 애호가다
방채영 기자는 언제나 책을 가까이하는 독서 애호가다. 에세이나 소설보다는 현실의 문제를 이해하고 실제 삶에 적용할 수 있는 실용·인문·사회 분야의 책을 상대적으로 선호한다.
독서 분야도 하나로 한정하지 않는다. 신앙과 역사, 국제정세, 경제, 공급망, 중국 사회, 빈곤, 미디어 산업과 언론 윤리 등 다양한 분야의 책을 폭넓게 읽는다.
가장 깊은 인상을 남긴 책은 힐러리 로댐 클린턴의 자서전 『살아 있는 역사』다. 이 밖에도 웨인 그루뎀의 『하나님을 영화롭게 하는 비즈니스』, 『사도 바울의 발자취를 찾아서』, 『공급망 붕괴의 시대』, 『우크라이나와 러시아』, 『보이지 않는 중국』, 『미디어 법과 윤리』, 『미디어 비즈니스 시장과 생태계』, 『빈곤 과정』 등 시대적 질문을 담은 책들을 좋아한다.
『빈곤 과정』을 읽으면서는 특히 “무엇이 가난인가”라는 질문을 깊이 생각하게 됐다. 가난을 개인의 상태로만 바라보는 것이 아니라 한 사람을 가난에 이르게 하는 사회적 구조와 과정까지 살펴봐야 한다는 문제의식이다.
그에게 독서는 단순히 지식을 축적하는 일이 아니다. 시대의 흐름을 읽고 익숙한 현상을 새로운 관점에서 바라보며, 기사로 다뤄야 할 질문을 발견하는 과정이다. 책을 통해 얻은 문제의식은 사람과 사회를 분석하고 새로운 콘텐츠를 기획하는 힘으로 이어진다.
성경적 세계관을 바탕으로
방채영 기자가 삶과 매체 운영의 기본 모토로 삼는 것은 성경적 세계관이다. 방 기자는 신앙과 현실의 일을 분리하기보다 자신이 하는 일이 어떤 가치를 남겨야 하는지 생각한다.
『하나님을 영화롭게 하는 비즈니스』와 같은 책에 관심을 두는 것도 이러한 태도와 맞닿아 있다. 언론사를 운영하는 일 역시 단순한 사업이나 정보 전달을 넘어 진실과 책임을 고민해야 하는 영역으로 바라본다.
더미디어저널리스트의 일반 뉴스 보도에서는 사실 확인과 균형을 기본 원칙으로 삼고, 사건의 본질과 맥락을 충실하게 전달하고자 한다. 성경적 세계관은 사람과 생명의 가치를 소홀히 하지 않으려는 방 기자의 삶과 판단의 토대다.
사진가의 눈으로 시대를 기록하다
방채영 기자는 한국방송통신대학교 미디어영상학과에 재학 중이며 현재는 휴학 상태다. 그동안 공부한 미디어 산업과 법·윤리에 관한 지식을 취재와 편집, 매체 운영에 적용하고 있다.

Bang Chae-young is the founder, publisher, and editor-in-chief of the online newspaper The Media Journalist. She oversees nearly every aspect of the publication—from planning, reporting, and writing articles to selecting images and managing the website.
Bang currently covers politics, society, the economy, media, popular culture, mental health, and religion. Although these subjects may appear unrelated, her reporting begins from the same place: rather than accepting events at face value, she examines the meanings and structures beneath them.
Before Bang began working with words, she worked with light.
Learning to Work with Light
Bang completed a web design course before entering the performing arts field as an assistant director at Rolling Hall in Hongdae. She later worked as an assistant lighting director for SJ B-Boys’ dance musical The Ballerina Who Loves a B-Boy.
Produced by SJ B-Boys, the show opened in December 2005 at a dedicated theater near Hongdae. It became known as a nonverbal performance combining breakdancing and ballet. Stage lighting does more than illuminate a performance. The direction, intensity, and color of light can make the same person or space appear entirely different. Lighting determines what is revealed and what remains hidden, guiding the audience’s attention and shaping the atmosphere of each scene.
For Bang, the lighting field was where she first learned how to look closely at people and objects. When the lighting director was replaced, she began reconsidering her own career. That change became a turning point that led her toward professional photography.
From Lighting to Photography
After leaving the lighting field, Bang picked up a camera and worked as a professional photographer for approximately ten years.
If lighting guided the audience’s gaze, photography required her to choose what to observe and record from among countless possible scenes. Bang did not regard photography simply as a technique for creating attractive images.
“While working as a photographer, I analyzed and observed things with my own eyes. I constantly studied what each subject represented.”
She considered what to include within the frame and what to exclude. She examined what a person’s expression or an individual object might communicate. Rather than merely recording what was visible, she sought to understand the meaning of the subject and the story behind it.
Bang also avoided dramatically altering the original colors of her photographs or applying excessive filters during post-processing. She believed it was important to preserve the appearance and atmosphere of the moment rather than make the subject look markedly different from reality.
That attitude later carried over into her journalism. Just as she avoided artificially changing the original colors of a photograph, she tries not to sensationalize facts or reshape them to fit a predetermined conclusion.
Her decade as a photographer taught her to observe patiently and analyze meaning. Those habits later became the foundation of her work as a journalist who asks about the causes and context behind events.
Observation Became a Question
A photograph can show a single moment, but it cannot always explain why that moment came to exist. Bang’s effort to understand the meaning of a subject gradually expanded into questions about the people and circumstances behind events.
Her work as a reporter for the regional publication Shinhan News marked the beginning of her career in journalism. The observational and analytical skills she had developed as a photographer continued to shape her reporting.
At Shinhan News, Bang covered local government and social and cultural issues, as well as politics and church affairs. In July 2023, she published a photo report on lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo’s participation in flood recovery work in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. She later expanded her reporting to include public safety, mental health, and issues involving religious organizations.
A photographer decides what belongs within the frame. A journalist must decide which facts require verification and which questions need to be asked. Photography captured a scene; journalism investigated how and why that scene had come into being.
Observation became photography, and the questions born from observation became journalism.
An Early Response to the Darakbang Controversy Brought Wider Recognition
Bang previously served as a public relations committee member of the World Evangelization Evangelism Alliance, Inc. She believed that disclosing this background was necessary so readers could properly assess the context of her reporting.
In 2024, while Bang was working at Shinhan News, the group known as Coramdeo Yeondae announced plans to pursue litigation seeking the return of donations made for the construction of the Remnant Unity Training Center, or RUTC. The announcement intensified what became known as the “Darakbang controversy.” Coramdeo Yeondae was formed primarily by former members and critics of the Darakbang movement.
On August 13, 2024, Bang published a Shinhan News report titled “World Evangelization Evangelism Alliance Issues Statement on Lawsuit Seeking Return of RUTC Construction Donations.” She said the report was not intended to offer unconditional support for one organization, but to give another party to the dispute an opportunity to present its position. Bang said she was the first journalist to respond to the Darakbang controversy through such reporting. The article brought her recognition within church circles as a journalist who had produced an early response to the controversy, but it also led to considerable repercussions.
According to Bang, Coramdeo Yeondae lodged complaints with Shinhan News after the article was published, and she was later dismissed from the newspaper. She believes those complaints influenced the decision to dismiss her.
The dismissal did not end her career in journalism. Instead, it led her to conclude that she needed an independent publication where she could take direct responsibility for her reporting and editorial decisions.
From Dismissal to Founding a Newspaper
After leaving Shinhan News, Bang came to believe that external complaints or pressure should not prevent one party’s position from being reported. She also became more convinced that the more contentious an issue is, the more necessary it becomes to verify competing claims and allow readers to hear what each party has to say.
Rather than continuing to work solely within the editorial policies of another publication, she decided to create a news outlet where she could pursue the facts and questions she considered important.
In 2025, she founded the online newspaper The Media Journalist. Its masthead was registered on January 9, 2025, and Bang currently serves as its representative and publisher. The outlet has also completed its online newspaper and business registrations.
If her dismissal from Shinhan News marked her departure from one newspaper, the founding of The Media Journalist represented her decision to take responsibility for her own editorial independence and reporting principles.
The outlet describes itself as “a news media organization that asks about the essence of events and reads their context.” Its aim is not merely to deliver isolated facts quickly, but to examine the background of events and the people affected by them.
How Bang Chae-young Writes an Article
Bang does not want an article to end after stating who did what, when, and where. She believes it is equally important to examine why an event occurred and how its consequences affect individuals and society.
In breaking news and general reporting, she seeks to follow the fundamental questions of who, what, when, where, why, and how. She prioritizes official announcements, original documents, and statements from the parties involved. Distinguishing verified facts from a reporter’s judgment—and avoiding definitive claims about unconfirmed information—are also among her central principles.
In features and criticism, she expands an individual event into a broader social question. Rather than treating each incident as a one-off story, she examines the institutions, culture, and recurring structures behind it.
At The Media Journalist, Bang covers politics, society, the economy, media, popular culture, mental health, and religion. Despite the breadth of these subjects, questions about people and society remain at the center of her work.

She discovers new questions within individual events and develops them into continuing editorial projects. One representative example is the special series The Age of Mental Illness.
The series challenges the social tendency to treat mental illness solely as a problem of individual will or character. The first installment, “How Far Will Humans Go to Survive?,” viewed the mental health crisis not as an individual failure but as a signal of the times. The second installment, “Depression Is Not Laziness,” examined the difference between choosing not to do something and being unable to do it, addressing one of the most common misconceptions about depression. Building the Space Where Journalism Is Published
When The Media Journalist was first launched, its website was built and operated through a newspaper website solutions provider. As Bang later reconsidered the purpose and identity of the publication, she also reviewed the structure and operating model of the original site.
She decided to build the current official website herself using WordPress. With Visual Studio Code and Claude Code, she planned and developed its structure, functions, and design.
She believed that the way articles are categorized and presented to readers is also part of a publication’s editorial direction.
Bang became not only a person who writes articles but also one who designs the space through which those articles reach readers. She now oversees news planning, reporting, writing, editing, image and digital content production, website management, and general operations.
Bang Is an Avid Reader
Bang is an avid reader who keeps books close at hand. Although she reads across genres, she tends to favor practical, humanities, and social science books that help her understand real-world problems and apply ideas to everyday life, rather than essays or fiction.
Her interests include faith, history, international affairs, economics, global supply chains, Chinese society, poverty, the media industry, and journalism ethics.
The book that made the strongest impression on her was Hillary Rodham Clinton’s memoir Living History. Other books she values include Wayne Grudem’s Business for the Glory of God, In Search of the Footsteps of the Apostle Paul, Peter S. Goodman’s How the World Ran Out of Everything, Paul D’Anieri’s Ukraine and Russia: From Civilized Divorce to Uncivil War, Invisible China, Media Law and Ethics, Media Business: Markets and Ecosystems, and Poverty as Process.
While reading Poverty as Process, she reflected especially deeply on the question, “What is poverty?” That question led her to consider poverty not only as an individual condition but also in relation to the social structures and processes that make people poor.
For Bang, reading is not merely a way to accumulate knowledge. It is a process of understanding the direction of the times, viewing familiar phenomena from new perspectives, and discovering questions worthy of journalistic attention. The concerns she encounters through books become a source of strength for analyzing society and planning new content.
Guided by a Biblical Worldview
Bang’s guiding principle in life and media management is a biblical worldview. Rather than separating faith from her work in the world, she considers what values her work should preserve and leave behind.
Her interest in books such as Business for the Glory of God reflects this approach. She views running a news organization not simply as a business or a means of distributing information, but as a responsibility that requires a commitment to truth and accountability.
In its general news reporting, The Media Journalist seeks to make verification and balance foundational principles while presenting the essence and context of events as faithfully as possible. For Bang, a biblical worldview is the foundation of a life and decision-making process that does not neglect the value of human beings and life.
Recording the Times Through a Photographer’s Eye
Bang is enrolled in the Department of Media and Video Studies at Korea National Open University and is currently on leave of absence. She applies what she has studied about the media industry, law, and ethics to reporting, editing, and publication management.
Her path is not merely a sequence of changes from one profession to another. The replacement of a lighting director became the catalyst for her transition into photography, while her dismissal from Shinhan News became the catalyst for founding her own newspaper.
Lighting taught her how to illuminate a subject. Photography taught her how to observe patiently. The questions born from that observation became journalism, and she built her own news organization to give those questions a place to be fully explored.
Today, through The Media Journalist, Bang Chae-young records not only the visible scenes of people, events, and the times, but also the meaning and context behind them.
