Writing News at a 24-Hour Café… How broobroo Cheonho Is Evolving into a “Third Place”
High Ceilings, Ambient Lighting, and Sofa-Centered Interior Design
An On-Site Experience of a Multifunctional Space for Studying, Working, Reading, and Relaxation
By Chaeyoung Bang | The Media Journalist
Located in the Jungheung S-Class commercial complex in Cheonho-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, broobroo Cheonho is a café that operates 24 hours a day. However, an on-site visit revealed that the establishment serves as more than just a place to purchase coffee. It functions as a multifunctional environment where studying, working, reading, and relaxation coexist.
The reporter visited the café to work on a news article and spent several hours experiencing the space firsthand, gaining insight into the practical value of its environment.
Upon entering the café, the first thing that stood out was not the coffee but the space itself. High ceilings, a spacious interior, and seating arrangements centered around leather and upholstered sofas created an atmosphere more reminiscent of a hotel lounge than a conventional coffee shop.
The interior was designed to accommodate a variety of activities. Customers working on laptops, students concentrating on their studies, visitors reading books, and small groups engaged in conversation naturally shared the same space.
The relatively generous spacing between seats also minimized interference among customers, allowing individuals to pursue their activities with a reasonable degree of comfort and privacy.
Electrical outlets were available near the reporter’s seat, making it possible to charge laptops, smartphones, and tablets. This convenience allowed for extended periods of work and study without significant interruption. Several other customers were also observed working with their devices connected to charging cables.
One of the most notable aspects of the visit was the overall atmosphere.
The café was not completely silent. The sounds of laptop keyboards, occasional conversations, and coffee preparation could be heard throughout the space. Nevertheless, the noise did not reach a level that significantly interfered with concentration.
Instead, most customers appeared absorbed in their own activities, creating an environment where working on a laptop or studying felt natural and comfortable.
The reporter also spent time drafting a news article and reviewing university assignments. Unlike some conventional cafés, where extended stays may lead customers to feel uncomfortable or conscious of those around them, there was little sense of pressure associated with remaining in the space for several hours.
The lighting design was another noteworthy feature.
Rather than relying primarily on bright white overhead lighting, broobroo Cheonho incorporated warm-toned ambient lighting, wall-mounted fixtures, and table lamps throughout the interior.
Indirect lighting installed along the upper walls softly illuminated the space, helping create an environment that felt less visually tiring during extended visits.
The lighting provided sufficient brightness for studying and working while maintaining the comfortable atmosphere typically associated with a lounge.
During the visit, the reporter not only worked on a news article but also spent time reading and reflecting on Scripture. Even after an extended stay, the lighting caused little noticeable visual discomfort.
The high ceilings were another defining characteristic of the space.
The café featured an open-ceiling design, with exposed pipes and building systems. This architectural approach contributed to a sense of openness, making the interior appear even more spacious.
Large indoor plants placed throughout the café also attracted attention.
Positioned between dark wood-paneled walls and sofas, the plants introduced natural elements into the interior and contributed to a visually calming environment.
Wood-paneled walls and tables, brown leather sofas, upholstered chairs, and green foliage complemented one another, creating a cohesive and relaxing atmosphere.
The café’s location offered additional advantages.
Restaurants and everyday convenience facilities were situated nearby, along with stores and supermarkets where visitors could purchase household essentials.
Cheonho Park was also within easy reach, providing an opportunity for customers to take a walk or enjoy a break during extended periods of studying or working.
The reporter currently operates an independent online news publication and is enrolled in the Department of Media and Visual Arts at Korea National Open University.
The purpose of this visit was not simply to enjoy a cup of coffee but to find a suitable environment for journalism and academic work.
Based on the firsthand experience, broobroo Cheonho offered spatial features that effectively supported both activities.
As cafés increasingly evolve beyond places for purchasing beverages into environments that accommodate a variety of everyday activities, broobroo Cheonho reflects this broader shift.
Studying, working, reading, and relaxing took place naturally within the same environment, while the interior design appeared to support customers who wished to remain for extended periods.
The on-site experience suggested that broobroo Cheonho’s competitive advantage lies less in its coffee offerings than in the versatility of its space.
High ceilings, ambient lighting, large indoor plants, sofa-centered seating arrangements, accessible electrical outlets, and an atmosphere conducive to extended visits collectively created an environment suitable for studying, working, reading, and relaxation.
The fact that the reporter visited the café to evaluate the space and ultimately completed a news article there illustrates its distinctive character.
Rather than functioning solely as a coffee shop, broobroo Cheonho has emerged as a multifunctional “third place” that accommodates how people spend their time and engage in everyday activities.
