현장에 있던 벽시계는 새벽 1시 28분 20초에 멈춰 있었다. 다만 이 시각은 범행 시각이 아니라 화재로 발생한 열 때문에 시계가 작동을 멈춘 시점일 수 있어 사망 시각으로 단정할 수 없었다.
방송에 출연한 서문수철 경기남부경찰청 과학수사대 화재조사팀장은 불을 붙인 뒤 일정 시간이 지나 불길이 커지는 ‘지연 연소’ 가능성을 분석했다.
만약 지연 연소 방식이 사용됐다면 범인은 불길이 본격적으로 번지기 전에 현장을 벗어났을 가능성이 있다. 이에 따라 최초 화재 발생 시점과 용의선상에 올랐던 인물들의 이동 시간을 다시 살펴볼 필요성이 제기됐다.
주변 인물 수사했지만 직접 증거 없어
당시 경찰은 피해자 주변 인물들을 폭넓게 조사했다. 수사와 과거 방송에 따르면 피해자의 남편과 막내 여동생도 용의선상에 올랐다. 두 사람의 관계와 피해자와의 갈등 가능성이 수사 대상이 됐기 때문이다.

A wall clock recovered from the scene had stopped at 1:28:20 a.m. That could not be treated as the exact time of the killings because the clock may have stopped due to heat from the fire.
Seo Moon-soo-cheol, head of a fire investigation unit with the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency’s forensic division, appeared on the program to assess whether delayed ignition could have been used.
If the fire had been set to spread after a delay, the perpetrator could have left the house before the flames became visible. This possibility raises questions about the estimated time of the fire and the movements of those who had previously been investigated.
No Direct Evidence Against Those Investigated
Police investigated a number of people connected to the victims. According to the investigation and previous broadcasts about the case, the victim’s husband and youngest sister were among those questioned because of their relationship and a possible conflict involving the victim.
The youngest sister was reportedly working a part-time job during the period police initially identified as the likely time of the crime. The victim’s husband also had an alibi indicating that he was working a night shift at a subway station.
Police were unable to obtain direct evidence linking either of them—or any other person investigated—to the killings. Neither was indicted or convicted in connection with the case.

According to earlier media reports, the victim’s husband said he had received approximately 4.8 million won in insurance payments following the deaths. It was later reported that the actual amount paid was approximately 260 million won.
