이재명 대통령이 2일 청와대에서 한-아프리카 외교장관회의 참석을 위해 방한한 아프리카 각국 장관급 인사들을 접견하고 한국과 아프리카 간 협력 확대 의지를 밝혔다.
대통령실 강유정 수석대변인은 이날 서면 브리핑을 통해 이 대통령이 아프리카 국가 및 지역 국제기구 소속 장관급 인사 20명과 만나 경제·개발협력·교육·보건 등 다양한 분야의 협력 방안을 논의했다고 전했다.
이번 접견에는 이집트, 케냐, 나이지리아, 알제리, 앙골라, 르완다, 튀니지 등 18개 아프리카 국가와 아프리카연합(AU), 아프리카 질병통제예방센터(Africa CDC) 관계자들이 참석했다.
이 대통령은 “취임 이후 아프리카 국가들과의 협력 증진에 각별한 관심을 가져왔다”며 “첫 한-아프리카 외교장관회의를 계기로 고위급 교류와 국제기구 선거 협력 등 다양한 분야에서 협력이 더욱 활성화되기를 기대한다”고 말했다.
이어 “유사한 역사적 경험을 가진 한국과 아프리카가 적극적으로 협력해 함께 발전하는 미래를 만들어 나갈 것”이라고 강조했다.
아프리카 국가 대표들은 한국이 농업, 식수 관리, 교육·기술, 전자정부, 디지털 전환 등 다양한 분야에서 개발협력을 지원해 온 데 대해 감사를 표했다.
특히 참석자들은 전쟁과 빈곤을 극복하고 경제 발전을 이뤄낸 대한민국의 경험이 아프리카 국가들에게 중요한 시사점과 영감을 주고 있다고 평가했다.
또한 한국 기업들의 투자 확대와 교육·보건 등 핵심 분야 협력 강화를 통해 아프리카의 지속가능한 성장에 기여해 줄 것을 요청했다.
참석자들은 한국 정부가 올해 한-아프리카 외교장관회의를 개최한 데 이어 2029년 한-아프리카 정상회의 개최를 추진하는 것에 대해 환영의 뜻을 밝혔다. 아울러 한국 정부의 대(對)아프리카 외교 강화 노력에 대해서도 높은 평가를 내렸다.
이에 대해 이 대통령은 “2029년 한-아프리카 정상회의에 대한 기대가 매우 크다”며 “정상회의 정례화와 외교장관회의의 지속적인 개최를 통해 양측 간 실질적인 협력이 더욱 강화되기를 희망한다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “정상회의 이전에도 기회가 되는 대로 아프리카 국가들을 방문해 협력 관계를 보다 폭넓고 깊이 있게 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 덧붙였다.
대통령실은 이번 접견이 한국과 아프리카 간 전략적 협력 관계를 강화하고, 경제·외교·개발협력 분야의 실질적 성과를 확대하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

President Lee Jae-myung Meets African Foreign Ministers, Pledges Stronger Korea-Africa Cooperation

President Lee Jae-myung met with ministerial-level representatives from African countries and regional organizations at the Blue House on Tuesday, reaffirming South Korea’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Africa across a wide range of sectors.
According to a written briefing released by Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Communication Kang Yoo-jung, President Lee welcomed 20 ministerial-level participants who visited South Korea to attend the inaugural Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
The delegation included representatives from 18 African countries—among them Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Algeria, Angola, Rwanda, and Tunisia—as well as officials from the African Union (AU) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
President Lee noted that he has placed special importance on enhancing relations with African nations since taking office. He expressed hope that the first Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting would serve as a catalyst for expanded high-level exchanges and broader cooperation in various fields, including collaboration in international organizations and elections.
“South Korea and Africa share similar historical experiences,” Lee said. “By working closely together, we can build a future of mutual growth and prosperity.”
African ministers and representatives thanked South Korea for its continued support in areas such as agriculture, water resource management, education, technology, e-government, and digital transformation.
They also highlighted South Korea’s remarkable journey from war and poverty to economic development, describing it as a valuable source of inspiration and practical lessons for African countries pursuing sustainable growth.
The participants further expressed hopes for increased investment by Korean companies in Africa and deeper cooperation in key sectors including education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
The African representatives welcomed South Korea’s decision to host the Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting this year and its plan to convene the Korea-Africa Summit in 2029. They praised Seoul’s growing diplomatic engagement with the African continent.
President Lee responded by emphasizing the significance of the planned summit.
“I have high expectations for the 2029 Korea-Africa Summit,” he said. “I hope that regular summit meetings and continued foreign ministers’ meetings will strengthen practical cooperation between Korea and Africa.”
He also expressed his intention to visit African countries whenever opportunities arise before the summit, aiming to further deepen and expand bilateral partnerships.
The presidential office stated that the meeting is expected to serve as an important step toward strengthening strategic ties between South Korea and Africa while promoting tangible cooperation in diplomacy, economic development, and international partnerships.
